London’s size and energy shouldn’t stop anyone from exploring it. The city has made big steps to open its transport network to everyone, no matter their age or access needs.

Accessible transport isn’t just about new lifts or ramps. It’s about equal access, freedom, and peace of mind for people with disabilities, older people, and anyone needing extra support.

London’s public transport looks more accessible than ever. Buses, the Underground, Overground trains, and even river boats include a range of features to help all Londoners:

  • Step-free access at many stations
  • Audio-visual information for clear updates
  • Trained staff on hand to offer help

Step-Free Access Across London

London buses are low-floor and wheelchair-friendly, with priority spaces near the door. Around 100 Tube stations are now step-free, with lifts and ramps making travel simpler for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs or heavy luggage.

The Overground, DLR, and Elizabeth line have even more step-free stations.

Find these routes using Transport for London’s (TfL) online step-free maps and journey planners, which highlight step-free journeys across the city.

Staff Assistance and Support Services

Worried about how to get from platform to train, or need extra help finding your way? TfL offers a ‘Turn Up and Go’ service at staffed Tube, Overground, and Elizabeth line stations. There’s no need to book. Station staff are trained to help:

  • Provide boarding ramps
  • Carry bags
  • Offer directions and travel advice
  • Guide passengers who have sight loss

Help is always just a request away.

Some people need to share information with staff quickly and discreetly. That’s where Travel Support Cards help. Just fill in your details and hand it to drivers or conductors to explain your needs clearly—without having to repeat yourself every time.

Taxicard: Subsidised Taxi Travel

The Taxicard scheme lets people with serious mobility issues travel by black cab or private hire vehicle at a fraction of the price. It’s a door-to-door service, perfect for hospital appointments, shopping trips, or family visits.

Taxicard advises all passengers (and carers) to wear a face covering when using the service, as other passengers following on from you, may have low immunity.

Who’s eligible?

  • London residents with a serious long-term disability, or
  • Those receiving certain disability benefits

After applying, you get a personalised card to book rides either online, by phone, or in an app. The discount covers most of the fare, so independent travel becomes an affordable everyday option.

Dial-a-Ride: Door-to-Door Minibus Service

Dial-a-Ride is a free, flexible minibus scheme for Londoners unable to use buses or trains. Like having your own chauffeur, it provides door-to-door trips across Greater London.

How does it work?

  • Call or book online at least a day in advance
  • The team arranges pick-up and drop-off times
  • Fully accessible vehicles with ramps and space for wheelchairs

Eligibility focuses on those with severe mobility difficulties or medical conditions stopping them from travelling alone.

Freedom Pass: Free and Discounted Travel

Older and disabled Londoners can travel for free or get big discounts on most buses, trains, Tubes, and trams across the city with the Freedom Pass.

Who can apply?

  • London residents aged 66 or over
  • People with disabilities who meet certain criteria

Apply online or at your local council, provide proof of eligibility, and start exploring more for less.

Community Transport Options

Community transport is run by local charities and councils. These services include:

  • Group minibus trips to shops, clubs, or social events
  • Individual travel for medical appointments

Eligibility rules and timetables vary by borough, but they all focus on serving people who struggle to use standard public transport.

NHS Patient Transport Services

If you can’t use public transport for medical reasons, the NHS offers free non-emergency patient transport. This covers travel to and from hospital appointments for eligible patients who can’t safely use other modes.

Check with your GP or hospital. If you qualify, they’ll book a suitable vehicle with trained staff, making sure you travel safely and in comfort.
