These alternatives to conventional couriers, give food for thought. Who says you always have to hire a big company with a big van, to get things from here to there? You can use alternative couriers to support companies that cycle or even walk goods to your door, and one can even help save your pub.
- Pedals (London) offers same-day bicycle delivery of parcels. It’s up to 50% cheaper (legs need no petrol or road tax) and up to 50% faster than driving.
- PubHub is a service for pubs to earn £1 to collect local parcels. Residents can pick them up in the evening, and stop for a pint.
- Postmates (US) is an app where local people earn money to deliver food from local shops and restaurants, by foot or bicycle.
If you order food delivery at home, why not support one of the growing numbers of companies that deliver by bicycle? Big supermarkets can’t do this, because they are delivering food often from hundreds of miles away. But many locally owned companies can do this, as there are fewer food miles, and it also gives a nice healthy job to someone local. Often the food gets to you quicker too (they can whizz through traffic jams). And often it’s cheaper as the companies don’t have to factor in petrol costs, road tax, MOT etc
Three Bags Full (Bath) delivers food to your door in zero emission electric cargo bikes. Cleaner, faster and cheaper, to replace the hordes of polluting diesel vans in the city. Its partnered with Good Sixty to let you do all your shopping online, then pay with a single checkout.
