pine marten Claire Tuxworth

This art print of a tree-climbing pine marten is designed to bring a little woodland wildlife to your walls. Sold unframed, the print is available in A3 or A4 size, by artist Claire Tuxworth.

Pine martens are rare nocturnal creatures, that are nearly always only found in northern England (and Scotland). These creatures are a priority species, protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

These woodland creatures like to forage and hunt for food, often by climbing trees. They are mustelids (mostly carnivorous animals with short legs – other mustelids are badgers, otters and weasels). Pine Martens mostly eat insects, birds and small rodents, but will also eat fruit and eggs.

These chestnut-brown creatures with ‘yellow bibs’ have long bushy tails. Sometimes during summer mating you may hear their ‘cat calls’, but mostly these beautiful animals are found in the Scottish Highlands and Ireland, although there have been rewilding projects in England recently.

The summer diet of pine martens mostly consists of blackberries, bilberries and rowan berries. So we can help by replanting natural woodlands, to restore their native habitats. They are endangered mostly due to our woodland cover having disappeared (they also used to be shot for ‘sport’ in Victorian times, and killed for their fur).
