If you travel abroad, there are lots of things you can do to help wildlife besides not shooting them (since the sad death of Cecil the lion, over 60 wild lions have been killed by British hunters). The dentist who shot him has since allegedly paid almost £100,000 to kill one of the world’s rarest sheep.
- Never buy souvenirs from unknown sources. Examples are feathers, tortoiseshell, ivory and ashtrays (sometimes made with gorilla paws).
- Don’t have photos taken with wild animals (apes are often removed from mothers and have teeth removed so they can’t bite).
- Don’t accept rides on animals (donkeys, camels, horses). Even in New York, many horses get spooked and suffer injuries in car accidents. Electric car carriages are beautiful and would also give drivers more income.
- Boycott bullfights (send complaint letters to tour operators).
- Don’t visit aquariums. Orcas at Seaworld often have sunburn due to hot sun and shallow waters, and are even masturbated for breeding.
- Be careful with ‘wildlife sanctuaries’, as many are just glorified zoos.
- Report abuse at zoos & circuses. Give details (photos if possible) to local shelters, the police, tour operator, Freedom for Animals & Born Free.
