Little Coffee Company empowers female farmers
Rather than support the big coffee brands, check out these home-grown brands (the brands, not the coffee – you can’t grow it here!) that make a positive difference, with each cup you drink.
Avoid caffeine for heart problems, anxiety and insomnia (check with GP if on medication). NHS recommends pregnant/nursing women drink no more than 200g of caffeine daily (1 mug of filter coffee). Or give it up completely at this time. Nobody should drink more than 4 cups of coffee a day!
Coffee to Help the Homeless
Change Please makes own-brand coffee with 100% of profits going to train homeless people to become professional baristas (over 85% of graduates find ongoing employment). You can order on subscription (the range includes a Welcome Stranger for a monthly surprise and decaffeinated).Sister company Old Spike Roastery pays 4 to 5 times more than Fair Trade premiums to coffee growers, and also sells compostable coffee pods.
Cafes can order a free kit from BillyChip that includes window decals, so homeless people can pop in for a cuppa, bought by others on a pay-it-forward basis. The idea was started in memory of a young paramedic campaigner.
Coffee to Help Ex-Prisoners
Redemption Roasters trains prisoners to become trained baristas, so they have skilled jobs on leaving prison, and less chance of re-offending. The range includes a zesty mandarin coffee (with notes of cocoa and caramel) and a fudgy baked-apple espresso. New Ground Coffee also uses profits to train ex-offenders.
Coffee to Help Emergency Crews
Frontline Coffee is a brand founded by firefighters. Each order lets you donate a portion to one of the chosen charities (all supporting those serving emergency personnel like the NHS, police and one that was founded to offer mental health support, set up in memory of a selfless Royal Navy nurse who committed suicide.
Coffee to Help Empowered Female Farmers
Little Coffee Company offers unique coffee from female farmers, paying up to 125% more than Fair Trade rates, by cutting out middlemen and mark-ups. 20p from each tin goes to a charity that helps farmers access solar lamps to replace candles or kerosene lamps (to help children read after the sun sets).
Coffee to Help the Songbirds
Bird & Wild Coffee is sold in easy-to-recycle packaging, with profits supporting charities that help preserve songbirds, many of which live in areas where coffee is grown. One site in One site in Mexico with shade trees had 184 birds and 609 insect species, compared to 12 without. The range includes Swiss Water decaffeinated coffee and instant granules.
