Boodle is a pretty online store founded by a textile designer, who grew up inspired by nature and animals in Devon, and now designs fun gifts from her home studio in Somerset. Everything is made locally and uses organic or sustainable materials, including organic cotton t-shirts for men, women and children. Everything is printed with eco inks (no toxins or plastic) and a tree is planted for every adult t-shirt purchased.
It’s often difficult for the average person to afford organic cotton clothing. But these are quite affordable, compared to most other brands. Organic cotton fibres last longer (due to not being treated with chemicals) so should last longer anyway. And this brand makes clothing locally and to Fair Wear standards (more stringent than Fair Trade). Choosing locally-made clothing is better, as it not only supports small artisans, but also prevents workers in faraway countries (like Bangladesh) being treated unfairly by big clothing companies.
Although the laws have been made slightly tighter, millions of garment factory workers still work in unsafe conditions with little pay or good working conditions. A few years back, several workers died, when a factory caught fire, with no means of escape. Since then, the big clothing manufacturers subscribe the Ethical Trading Initiative, but the standards are nowhere near to Fair Wear. Visit Good on You and type in your favourite fashion brand or store, and prepare to be surprised just how unethical most of them still are – for both human and animal welfare, and environmental impact.
