frosty morning Caroline Smith

When winter descends upon England, it brings with it a morning spectacle that few other seasons can match. Frost clings to the landscape, offering a magical touch that transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you pause and appreciate the subtle charm of winter days.

Frost is something we experience a lot of in England. In simple terms, frost occurs when the air temperature in contact with the ground is below the freezing point of water). This is the kind of frost that you find on the grass first thing in the morning.

There are other types of frost, but you likely don’t really need to know about these, unless you are meteorologist! Apart from glaze frost (a clear ice that you should take care of, as it sometimes looks like wet rain, so can be slippery).

Can you predict a frost? Usually if the temperature the night before is between 0 and 4 degrees C (with little cloud and wind) it’s likely to be frosty outside the next morning. Especially if the air temperature is expected to fall below zero.

Obviously the further north you go, the more likely you are to get frost due to colder temperatures (the coldest place in the UK is unsurprisingly the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland).

If air moisture touches glass, this causes ice crystals that move across glass, to look like ‘ferns’. A crystal is caused by liquid molecules becoming so cold, that they cling to each other, like penguins in the Antarctic!

Why Gardeners Protect Plants from Frost

Frost melts when the sun comes out, the next morning. Plants outside can survive light frosts, but if it’s really freezing, the cold will kill them, which is why you are often told to tend seedlings indoors before planting out in spring. Or use a greenhouse or polytunnel.

Live with animals? Learn how to make your garden safe for pets. Avoid facing indoor foliage to gardens, to help stop plants flying into windows.

Walk Safely in Frosty Weather

Navigating icy paths requires caution. Walk slowly, taking short steps to maintain your balance. Keep your hands free for stability. If driving, allow extra time for your journey and ensure your car is winter-ready.

How to Defrost Car Windscreens

Rather than use toxic de-icing sprays, there are other solutions:

  • Park your car undercover!
  • Use a windscreen cover overnight (an old car mat will do).
  • Use a manual scraper (as long as you don’t wake the neighbours).
  • Park your car facing east (the early morning sun will melt the ice).
  • Rub an onion on the windscreen the night before. The oil lines the glass, to stop freezing (keep onions away from pets).

Don’t use hot air inside cars, if babies/dogs are with you. Antifreeze is lethal to pets & wildlife, so let your mechanic change it in an enclosed space. If you do change it yourself, use a funnel (as with oil) and use sand or kitty litter to absorb spills (don’t mop).

The Magic of Frosty Mornings

Winter may not be everyone’s favourite season, but there’s a unique allure to those crisp, frosty mornings. The air is sharp and refreshing, and there’s a quiet sense of anticipation in the atmosphere. As the first light creeps over the horizon, frost-covered surfaces glint like diamonds scattered across the land.

Frost is like nature’s artist, painting everything in shades of white and silver. Gardens become enchanted realms where leaves look like they’ve been dusted with sugar.

Fields take on an ethereal quality, and even cityscapes get an upgrade, with rooftops and pavements covered in a delicate frost. It’s as if the whole world has been given a fresh coat of paint.

There’s a rare stillness on a frosty morning that feels almost sacred. The usual early-morning hustle is replaced by a gentle calm.

Birds are quieter, and sounds are muffled, creating a peaceful backdrop for reflection. It’s the perfect time to gather your thoughts and set a tranquil tone for the day ahead.

Walking in a frost-covered landscape is like stepping into a winter wonderland. Many areas in England offer scenic trails that are especially beautiful during these months.

Consider a walk through the Lake District or a ramble along the South Downs. Each step crunches underfoot, adding a satisfying rhythm to your journey.

A frosty morning offers the perfect opportunity for mindfulness. As the world slows down, so can you. Take a moment to breathe, reflect, and enjoy the simple beauty of your surroundings. It’s a chance to reset and find peace amidst the daily hustle.
