Dandruff is a condition of dry scalp, where flakes of skin appear (it’s nothing to do with whether hair is clean or dirty). The best way to prevent it is to avoid chemical shampoos that irritate the scalp, and send the PH out of balance. A nice natural shampoo should help, give it a fewf weeks. You don’t have to coat your head in chemicals or tea tree oil, which could actually irritate it further. Cradle cap is the name for ‘dandruff in babies’, see below for tips.
The Ecologist reports that the best-selling brand of anti-dandruff shampoo includes ingredients that are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. At the very least, the ingredients could irritate your scalp. Green People makes organic shampoo and conditioner for itchy scalps.
One of the best remedies for dandruff is apple cider vinegar, as it can dissolves any scales on your head, but avoid for sensitive skin. For a gentler option, Bain & Savon makes hair rinses in aluminium bottles that contain cider vinegar. Work through your hair after shampoing, leave a few minutes, then rinse off.
Although dandruff is not a serious condition, it can be unsightly and uncomfortable. It’s not caused by not washing your hair, although trichologists (hair doctors) say that the ‘no poo’ method (never washing your hair) can lead to dandruff, as it’s a myth that ‘hair cleans itself’. Yeast infections can also cause dandruff, and other skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. Many men suffer, possibly due to hormonal reasons. Those with nerve diseases (like Parkinson’s) or weak immune systems (like HIV) also get it more.
How to Prevent & Treat Cradle Cap
Cradle cap is just ‘infant dandruff’ and usually not serious, and not contagious. Use natural soaps and rub on a little non-scented baby oil to soften, then gently loosen flakes with a soft dry washcloth, after around 15 minutes. Use a humidifier to provide more moisture in the air. If the condition spreads or becomes red or swollen, seek medical attention.
