Learn to Do Nothing!
Social media is all about doing stuff. Looking up what people are doing, and they see what you are doing. If you don’t feel loved, you can take umpteen selfies, and then people will ‘like’ your photos and you’ll feel better. Or trolls will ‘unlike you’ and then you feel bad. So your whole existence is being determined by people who likely don’t even know you – and have nothing better to do than ‘like and unlike’ people they don’t know on a computer screen. It’s all pretty futile, isn’t it?
Even if it’s just for one day, try signing off. See how you feel if you spend the day differently: wake up and meditate or pray, whizz up a smoothie, go for a walk on the beach. Make some dinner, have real conversations on the phone or in person, eat a bowl of chilli while watching an episode of Columbo. Take a bath – and then sleep. All without checking your phone or computer for who is playing games on Facebook or making mischief on Twitter. All without yearning for someone else’s hairstyle or house on Pinterest, or wishing you had the business success of someone on LinkedIn. If there’s time to spare, go and meet up with some ‘real friends’ down the pub!
