Make Your Own Vegan Crackers

There are a few brands of palm-oil-free vegan crackers. But making your own crackers avoids plastic packaging (store these in an airtight container).  Easy Vegan Crackers (Vegan on Board) are made with flour, olive oil, warm water, salt and sugar. Use three times as much fresh herbs as dried, these ones include rosemary in the dough. Also try their sourdough discard crackers (made with olive oil and optional dried herbs, black pepper, sea salt or seeds).

Never feed dry foods like crackers nor fatty foods like butter to garden birds or wildfowl, as they can choke and affect insulation/waterproofing of feathers). Keep fresh dough, herbs, onion, vegan cheese etc away from pets.

Almond Rosemary Flour Crackers (The Simple Veganista) are made from just almond flour, flaxseed meal, water and salt. These crackers offer a simple healthy snack, that’s fun and easy to make.

Savory Oat Crackers (Salted Plains) can be made with fresh herbs pressed in (rosemary, thyme, sage) or add vegan cheese instead, if you prefer. Or try the same blogger’s gluten-free vegan cheese crackers that are made with oat and rice flour.

Homemade Rye Crackers are easy to make, and ideal for a vegan cheeseboard. Or  try these seeded rye crackers instead.

Where to Buy Palm-Oil-Free Crackers

Unless you make your own crackers, most people buy them on shops. Ideal to serve with crudities or vegan cheese, the problem is that most brands contain palm oil, which is harming the habitats of orangutans and other endangered creatures. There is no such thing as sustainable palm oil. Instead, try some of these palm-oil-free cracker brands instead. Recycle any plastic packaging with household recycling or at supermarket bag bins.

Never give birds leftover crackers (or dry, stale or mouldy bread), as they can choke. Also never give any crackers or bread to birds with butter or fat, as it can affect the insulation/waterproofing of feathers. Easy Bean is a small innovative company, determined to give beans the culinary status they deserve. Organic Veganz Onion Crackers are made from oat and chickpea flours, onion powder and rice syrup, along with organic natural flavourings. This is a popular brand sold throughout Europe. Keep onions away from pets.

Dr Karg offers a couple of vegan crispbread options, made with olive oil in packaging that saves on plastic foil. Choose from Classic 3 Seed (sunflower, sesame, linseed) or 5 Grain (linseed, sunflower, sesame, pumpkin and oat flakes). The company also offers a range of crispbreads:

  1. Fantastic Pumpkin
  2. Amazing Amaranth
  3. Incredible Quinoa

Amisa Gluten-Free Crispbreads

Amisa Crispbreads and Crackers are all free from palm oil, made with garden veggies, chickpea flour, chestnut flour and buckwheat. Recycle packaging at supermarket bag bins.

Rebon recycled crackers

Rebon is a French-Canadian brand of crackers, made from the malted barley leftover from brewing beer. To make beer, malted barley is immersed in a vat of hot water to take out sugar. Then after filtering the wort (sweet liquid), the spent grain is leftover. Making 1000 litres of beer generates around 300 kilos of malt, which usually goes to landfill.

Never feed stale bread (or hard bread like crackers) to birds as it can choke (also fatty bread like sandwiches can affect waterproofing/insulation of feathers).

This company takes the spent grain from a local brewery, and then crushes it into a paste and then gently oven-bakes into a range of crackers in the following flavours:

  1. Rosemary Tomato Thyme
  2. BBQ
  3. Salt & Pepper
  4. Everything Bagel
  5. Poppy & Chipotle

7kg of these crackers are made from 3kg of malted barley, left over from making 20 beers. The toasted cereal and caramel taste is also packed with nutrition, giving 70% dietary fibre, 20% protein, plus essential amino acids and minerals.

Peter’s Sourdough crackers are sold in good food shops.
