Supermarkets now sell a wide variety of plantmilks. But oat milk is nearly always the best choice. It can be made from locally-grown oats, and even offers transfarmation opportunities for struggling livestock farmers, to sell more profitable foods. However, nearly all plantmilks sold in England are still made with mostly water and oil (rather than oats or nuts) and sold in plastic bottles.

Plantmilks are not replacements for baby formula (talk to your midwife). Keep plantmilks away from pets (due to nuts, chocolate etc). Read more on food safety for people & pets.

If making homemade oat milk (oats, vanilla, salt and dates), sterilise jars, before bottling: Run glass bottles on the highest dishwasher setting or wash in hot soapy water, then dry (no tea towel) in the oven. Sterilise rubber seals, by soaking in a jug of boiling water.

Oat milk is a creamy drink when made right, and ideal for cooking, baking and makes wonderful hot chocolate. It’s also rich in calcium and potassium, and naturaly high in fibre. Oats of course are also good for your heart.

The Best Brands of English Oat Milk

rerooted milk

ReRooted (Devon) was co-founded by a former Manchester United footballer who opened England’s first zero waste shop and a former dairy vet. This company delivers nationwide through partners in returnable glass bottles. Organic ingredients are bought from co-ops to produce rich creamy milks including oat.

The milks are gently pasteurised (not rendered nutritionally useless with UHT) and delivered locally in electric vans, so you don’t get woken up before 7am. The bottles are then collected, washed and reused for next time. Find online at Abel & Cole:

Oats (just like nuts) have calcium, and you can also get calcium from other foods like broccoli or beans on toast. These drinks use triple-filtered water and a little salt with sunflower lecithin (needed to help the liquid and fat stay together, as you shake the bottle).

ReRooted plantmilks contain more base ingredients than most commercial brands. For instance, their almond milk uses 6.5% (compared to 1%) and hazelnut uses 7%. So just like wonky vegetables, these drinks may not be ‘perfect white’ but have more taste and nutrition.

  • Oat is naturally creamy and a good all-rounder, perfect for hot drinks and great for porridge. The foamable Barista version is perfect for lattes. Cold Brew combines their oatmilk with ethically-roasted coffee for a nice ready-made iced coffee drink (or heat it up).
  • Hazelnut has a chocolately undertone, and is great for hot chocolate drinks.
  • Cashew is naturally buttery in flavour, the perfect replacement for people who love the taste of cow’s milk. Perfect in your morning cuppa!
  • Almond is naturally nutty, and good in smoothies and hot drinks, with cereal or to use in baking recipes.
  • Coconut is good on its own. Also great in tropical smoothies and hot chocolates.

oato milk

Oato (Lancashire) is an organic plantmilk made from British-grown oats and designed to be ‘foamable’ for baristas. Again it’s sold in glass bottles for delivery in returnable bottles or nationally at Milk & More. All oat bran waste is turned into bio-methane, to feed into the national grid, to power northwest homes and businesses.

Oato drink is available in several versions:

  • Whole – rich & cream, ideal for coffee
  • Strawberry – popular for young drinkers, good in smoothies
  • Caffè Latte – infused with caramel
  • Chocoloato – nice for breakfast drinks, pour into coffee or use for cereal

oato milk

Oato is now sold in Waitrose & Booths supermarkets. It’s the same format, and sold in easy-to-recycle 1 litre poly bottles over glass. This is because whilst glass is good to be reused up to 28 times, it’s not eco-friendly to keep recycling it, so this option has been chosen for now, as it’s super-easy to recycle after one use.

Toats Mylk

Toats Mylk is a fresh drink made by organic farmers in Hampshire, sold in returnable glass bottles.

You can order via a local veg box scheme, and the wholesale boxes have taps for dispensing. Ideal for local people and businesses to buy, to support their local farmers.

Oat Milk Powder

Unherd and MIGHTY both sell oat milk powder, which you can mix with water, to make your own oat milk. This is ideal if you don’t live near stores that sell oat milk, as you can order online and make it up at home.

Reusable Silicone Milk Bottle Tops

milktopz

Milk Topz is a little company that makes reusable tops for milk bottles, made from non-toxic silicone. They are airtight and leakproof, and ideal for people who drink milk. You can also use MilkTopz for Oato Oat Milks (above) that have foil lids. Milks keep fresher for longer, and these tops stack in the fridge.

Sold with a good guarantee, these are leakproof and made from FDA-approved food-grade silicone. The family business was started by people who did not like the ‘fridge smell’ of opened bottles of milk. You can also use these Topz to store glass bottles of juice, and the company also offers pots to cover yoghurt and cream, again leakproof for easy storage.
