Burgers are one of England’s favourite fast foods. Of course they stem from North America. But as well as not being kind to cows, we don’t have enough land in England for everyone to eat free-range, so eat plant-based some of (if not all of) the time. This black bean burger (Ela Vegan) is made with natural ingredients.

This recipe for classic plant burgers is simple. Toast the burger buns in a dry pan, then fry burgers in a little oil for a few minutes each side. Melt a slice of vegan cheese on each one. Then add fresh lettuce to the sliced buns, top with burgers, sliced tomatoes and red onion, and finish with gherkins, ketchup and vegan mayo.

This is much simpler than you’d think. Try this recipe from Thee Burger Dude (an American man who loved fast food and animals, so decided to create vegan versions of his favourite meals).
Or try this recipe for a plant-based Big Mac (Vegan Kevin). The secret’s really in the sauce. Once you get that right, you can use any good vegan burger with lettuce, sliced tomatoes and a slice of vegan cheese in a bun.
Where to Buy Good Vegan Burgers
Look in shops for Moving Mountains burgers, which are packed with protein. Sold to all hotels and restaurants, this brand was founded by a vegetarian entrepreneur, who was told by his doctor to give up dairy for his health. It also makes vegan sausages, hotdogs and vegan fish!
London’s amazing Unity Diner (which for six years offered the best vegan burgers in the city) sadly has had to close in January 2025 due to massive rising costs (across all the restaurant sector, not just vegans).
