NAE (no animals exploited) is a popular European vegan footwear brand, which offers many lovely heeled sandals, and often made with unique eco materials. Made from breathable corn leather (not plastic) these shoes and sandals let your feet breathe, and are easy to wipe clean.
Leather is not a by-product of the meat industry (most leather goods are made in countries with poor animal welfare laws and the leather process is very polluting).
Nearly all shoes are made in Asia from leather (in countries with poor welfare laws for animals and humans – the tanning process is very polluting). Cheap vegan shoes are made from pleather (plastic leather) that are not good for the planet and make your feet sweat.
Instead, invest in a couple of pairs of quality vegan sandals made from Microfiber (wear on alternate days, to let them dry out). Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
As most quality vegan shoes are still sold online, visit the shoe shop to get your feet measured (or measure your own feet). If you’re a half-size, it’s okay to order the bigger size (feet swell when running and you’ll likely be wearing socks). European brands don’t offer half sizes.

If you prefer more flat sandals, check out NAE’s comfy Birkenstock-style sandals too:
Unlike clothing (which has to be laundered), choosing footwear made from upcycled materials is a great way to use up post-consumer waste, and save on buying leather (so this helps animals too!)
Caring for Your Vegan Sandals
Proper storage can extend the life of your sandals. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid stacking them on top of each other to prevent damage. Consider using shoeboxes or dust bags for extra protection during the off-season.
