As you likely know, scrumping is the (illegal) act of stealing apples from people’s gardens. This e-book instead creates a legal community project that benefits all. Download the free handbook from Sheffield’s Abundance Network. The Abundance Handbook gives all the info you need to start your scrumping project for your community.
Apple chunks are choking hazards for babies and people with swallowing difficulties. Keep pets away from apples due to pips/seeds containing natural cyanide (and recipes that use dried fruits, nutmeg or fresh dough). Read more on keeping people & pets safe in the kitchen.
Always ask permission before feeding apples to equines, as too many cause colic. If you do feed horses a cut up apple as a treat, feed from a flat palm to prevent choking (and discard the core).
Many landowners have large gardens with apple trees, but perhaps not the good health, time or tools to harvest them. So they fall to the ground as windfalls. Some get eaten by wildlife (good) but the rest just rot away (bad).
So ‘scrumping volunteers get the necessary training and tools, to (with permission)’ scrump the apples so they don’t go to waste. A third goes to the scrumper, a third to the landowner and the rest (including bruised fruits) go to community projects, often to make into local apple juice.
It’s a great way of stopping food waste and supermarket profits, and providing yummy local fresh apples to everyone in your local area.
