Switch Over to Natural Sea Salt

Unless you are not allowed to eat it for medical conditions, a little sea salt provides iodine and is packed with minerals. Choose a sustainable harvested brand, over bleached table salt in plastic pots.

Wight Salt is organic and sustainably harvested from local waters. The salt is evaporated using a solar still, which evaporates the salt to make it clean, in a microplant 10 miles from Ventnor. This technique is still used by the Navy at sea, to make polluted water safe to drink.

SC Salt is evaporated in the Scilly sunshine, from waters around St Martin’s Par. The salt is sold in various flavours including chilli, garlic, salt & pepper and smoked salt. All the salt is recovered from the seawater pumped into the salt pans, and sealed in packets at the family farm.

Unless you can’t have it for medical reasons, sea salt is better than cakey white table salt (salt is toxic to other creatures so don’t feed salty foods to pets, nor leftovers to garden birds or wildfowl). One of England’s best sea salt brands is SC Salt, harvested sustainably in the crystal clear waters of St Martin’s, using traditional salt pans, letting the local Scilly sunshine evaporate the water over several weeks. Sold in various flavours (smoked, chilli or garlic), this is wonderful to cook with (in Italy, cooking spaghetti without salt is called ‘silly pasta!)

We love their Isles of Scilly Navigation Chart commissioned for a local artist. The chart marks the origins of characters from across the islands with a few little hidden treasures there too, from the island where pirates once roamed. Shiver me timbers!

I am going to listen to the wind and see what it tells me, or see if it tells me anything at all. I will follow the songlines and see what they sing to me. And I might bring a harvest of fresh tales, which I can scatter like apple seeds across this tired and angry land.
