The Best Biodegradable Cleaning Brands

elmkind all purpose cleaner

These all-purpose biodegradable cleaning brands are better than most brands on the market. Gather all your toxic cleaners and securely wrap and bin, and switch to something better. Use with biodegradable cleaning cloths.

Never mix any cleaner with bleach. Avoid essential oils near babies/children. Read why not to harm spiders (most die if put outside) and use humane methods to deter ants, mice etc.

Avoid essential oils and Borax/alternatives near pets (close toilet lids, after cleaning). See toxic houseplants to avoid near pets (plants don’t clean the air; a 30-year old myth – just brushing a tail against a lily, sago palm or cheese plant can harm). Avoid disinfectants near pets (they lick their paws: Erin Heights Vet Hospital says Dettol destroys bacteria walls) and Veterinary Poisons Information Service says Zoflora can cause ulcers.

Never mix cleaners of any kind with bleach (you could die, really). Keep essential oils away from babies and pets, and also avoid Borax (toxic to pets, close toilet lids, after cleaning if used). Read why not to harm spiders (most die if put outside) and use humane methods to deter ants, mice etc.

Houseplants don’t ‘clean the air’ (some houseplants are toxic to pets like lilies, sago palm and cheese plants). Don’t use disinfectants near pets (they lick their paws after walking on countertops etc – Erin Heights Vet Hospital says Dettol destroys bacteria walls, and Veterinary Poisons Information Service says Zoflora can cause ulcers.

Elmkind Lavender & Tea Tree All-Purpose Cleaner is sold in an aluminium bottle with refill concentrate to make 5 x 500ml bottles. Profits help animal welfare and ocean clean-up charities. Or use Sweet Orange Natural Kitchen Cleaner (use Bio-D unscented above, if you live with pets).

Do not recycle with paper or plastic. 18 months shelf life. The bathroom cleaner smells of eucalyptus oil.

Bide offers eco-friendly cleaning boxes that support unemployed women. Each monthly box contains 400g of eco dishwasher powder fragranced with peppermint essential oil, an eco washing up liquid with lemon oil (pour into a bottle and dilute with water) and 10 eco toilet cleaning bombs to fizz up with lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils.

Vegan and free from palm oil, these are sold in a paper envelope and just remove the water so you are just left with a powder. The sheets dissolve in hot or cold water to produce a biodegradable cleaner. Choose from a pack of 10 or a pack of 30 in fresh lemon. Just pop one sheet in a bottle and add water, shake for 2 minutes or submerge in a bucket with one sheet per 500ml to 750ml. Good to wash up or to clean bathrooms, kitchens, windows and floors. The Best Natural Disinfectants

  1. Bio-D is sold in recycled plastic bottles, often bulk sizes and refill bottles in health shops and farm shops. There are unscented options including fragrance-free sanitising handwash that neutralises 99.9% of harmful germs. Also makes Floor Cleaner.
  2. Greenfrog Botanic Out & About Disinfectant is one of the best on the market. This natural organic disinfectant can be used on hands and surfaces, and is made with hypochlorous acid, which is a WHO-recognised disinfectant and is PH neutral, so kind to hands while killing 99.9% of germs and viruses. Fill Refillable Vegan Scrub Powder

Fill Refillable Vegan Scrub Powder is made with biodegradable ingredients (including clary sage essential oil) and sold in a glass bottle, which you can fill up with a refill pouch, when you run out. Made in Nottinghamshire by a family company, it also contains linalool (not in unfragranced) and over 30% recycled waste marble powder. To make your own cream cleaner, just place the powder in a bowl and add a few drops of water (no more than one or teaspoons needed). Stir to make a thick paste, then test on an inconspicuous area, before use. Then use with any preferred cleaning tool, to remove dirt, grime and limescale.

Bicarbonate Soda & White Vinegar

Most natural cleaning recipes use baking soda and white vinegar, but you won’t get far with those tiny pots of baking soda in shops, and most supermarkets don’t sell white (cleaning) vinegar. You can buy in bulk from Dri-Pak (their site has lots of cleaning tips).

This bulk box of bicarbonate of soda is ideal to use, instead of toxic cleaning products, and can be used instead of many items. Made in Northamptonshire, this natural cleaning agent is good for absorbing bad smells, or as a mild abrasive, to cut grime. Derived from sodium carbonate, water and recycled CO2 – this is a mild alkali mineral that can combine with eco washing and cleaning products, to give surfaces a more powerful clean. Sold as a starter kit and 500g refill jar. Not for food use.  Use baking soda for:

  1. Absorbing smells in the fridge (keep in a bowl)
  2. A mild abrasive cleaner
  3. Sprinkle on carpets overnight (away from pets and children) then vacuum the next day, to remove odours
  4. Bee stings (mix 1/4 cup with 2 teaspoons of water, then apply paste every 15 minuts to reduce inflammation (wasp stings should be treated with white vinegar). Wipe in opposite direction to the sting with the edge of a credit card, to avoid squeezing venom into the skin.

This bulk box of cleaning vinegar is ideal to replace lots of toxic items that are normally used for household cleaning. Diluted to a safer concentrate, you can use this for cleaning glass, floors, work surfaces and bathrooms. Made in Northamptonshire, just add a small amount to eco cleaning products or water to get rid of tough stains and limescale. You can buy the starter pack then order refill jars. Not suitable for food use.  Vinegar is acidic, so don’t use on natural stone, unsealed grout or waxed surfaces. Test on an out-of-sight area, and dilute if concentration is too high. Wearing gloves is recommended.  Vinegar can be used to:

  1. Remove limescale from taps & kettles
  2. Clean glass & mirrors
  3. Clean windscreens
  4. Clean washing machine seals/drawers
  5. Use instead of rinse aid or fabric conditioner

Natural Cleaning Tips

  1. To clean a washing machine, use 1/2 cup of white vinegar in final rinse (use 2 cups on empty hot cycle to clean machine). Add 1/2 cup baking soda to the drum, then wipe inside with damp cloth.
  2. To whiten socks without harmful bleach, just add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to one litre of heated (warm) water, then soak for 30 minutes, then wash as normal. You can alternatively use lemon juice, but it will take longer (a few hours).
  3. For reusable cleaning cloths, nappies and menstrual pads, replace fabric conditioner (reduces absorbency) with white vinegar in the final rinse.

Bio-D Natural Furniture Polish

Bio-D has launched the UK’s most eco-friendly wooden furniture polish. Packed in a metal tin and free from chemicals and beeswax, this is a vegan-friendly polish that you can use to maintain your furniture. It contains linseed oil to nourish wood (flammable on its own but okay in this hopefully) and protect against finger marks and spillages. No palm oil either.

This produces good bacteria, enzymes, carbon dioxide and water, to naturally break down.

Natural Stain Removal Bar is a plant-based bar made with biodegradable ingredients, to effectively remove stubborn stains. Safe for clothing and skin, it’s made from soapnuts (organic tree fruits that contain real soap – do not put in compost bin, as the natural insecticide could harm garden creatures – it will naturally break down in the bin). The stick will not discolour clothes or fabrics, and is effective on grass stains, red wine, ketchup, blood, grease, collars and cuffs. Even the most stubborn stains are washed away. To remove fabric stains, wet the material and bar to create suds, then wash. For carpets and upholstery, wet bar and rub into a sponge then apply, remove excess suds with a damp cloth and leave to dry. Made in the UK and free from palm oil, packaged in a paper sleeve. Scented with eucalyptus and the deodorising power of litsea.

Dr Dre’en is a citrus-scented ocean friendly drain cleaner to speed up slow-moving drains and pipes. It comes in a handy Biopod that dissolves in a jug of water and pours down the plughole. The plastic-free pod dissolves and is extremely effective. Can remove small blockages only. Hairy Scumbag is the drain maintainer and the former may not be needed. Coconut based enzymes and natural surfactants are key to lift dirt, oil, grease and grime. Safe for septic tanks.

Scrubbing Brush has tampico bristles and a beechwood handle, and a handle that is easy to hold and use. Won’t scratch surfaces and is resistant to heat, acids and alkalis, with good water absorption so good for scrubbing.

Citric acid (in compostable pouches) is a good household staple to have on hand in plastic-free packaging. You can use citric acid to replace many toxic cleaning items. A natural acid found in citrus fruits, it’s ideal to remove limescale (especially in areas with hard water). This helps items like kettles, coffee machines, steam irons and washing machines to last longer, and also uses electricity. You can also use it as a sub for white vinegar in homemade cleaning recipes.

  1. To remove limescale in kettles, pour in a tablespoon of citric acid and enough water to cover the baseplate, then switch it on and turn off just before it boils. Repeat, then discard the water and rinse thoroughly.
  2. You can also use a hot water solution of citric acid to remove limescale from showerheads, and to restore cloudy  drinking glasses.

Bide washing-up concentrate

Bide is a unique brand of zero waste cleaning products (with refill options for wholesale orders). Made from non-toxic raw ingredients, these items do not cause damage to the planet or water supplies, and you can also buy eco-cleaning boxes, containing all you need to start you off. Typical ingredients include coconut surfactants, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium chloride (salt) and essential oils (peppermint, lavender, lemon, eucalyptus). Avoid essential oils for pregnancy/nursing and near pets/babies (use unscented options).

Founded with an environmental ethos, this truly sustainable business is unique in that the products are made at home factories, often giving jobs to people who otherwise could not go out to work (homeless people, refugees, women with convictions, and those recovering from addiction). The plastic-free range includes:

bide toilet freshening tablets

Eco-Friendly Toilet Freshening Bombs fizz away limescale and dirt. Infused with essential oils of peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus, these leave your toilet bowl smelling fresh and the anti-microbial properties eradicate germs. Switch to Biodegradable Cleaning Cloths

eco living compostable sponge cloths

Conventional cleaning cloths are often made from polyester or microfibre, both of which emit micro-plastic pollution when laundered. These cloths are instead made from a blend of biodegradable cotton and renewable cellulose (wood pulp) so do no harm. They can be washed in the dishwasher or washing machine, then take around 6 weeks to biodegrade back to the earth.

Use scent-free dish wash for pet/baby bowls. Use with biodegradable cleaning brands (avoid essential oils for pregnancy/nursing and medical conditions like asthma, epilepsy and high blood pressure). Also avoid essential oils near babies and pets.

eco living compostable sponge cloths

Eco Living Compostable Sponge Cloths are sold in sets, and again feature pretty water-based prints. Made in Europe, they are very durable and absorbent, and ideal to clean kitchens and bathrooms.

leave no trace plastic-free sponges

Leave No Trace Plastic-Free Sponges have a spongy cellulose core, ideal to clean kitchens and bathrooms. The coarse linen side is ideal for tough stains, and the canvas side is good to mop spills. Made with unbleached cotton thread, each sponge should last around 2 months.

good clean sponge

Delphis Eco is one of the best brands of eco commercial cleaning products, use them in bulk for shops, offices, schools and council offices etc. The founder was raised in South Africa, before moving to London to work in the city and wanted to show that you can make a business profitable but at the same time do good for the planet. After researching businesses abroad, he set up this brand that uses biodegradable ingredients in sustainable packaging.  And their products are 98% more effective than competitive, proving that green really does work.

Cellulose Reusable Cleaning Cloths

bower collective reusable cleaning cloths

Bower reusable cleaning cloths are made from cellulose (wood pulp) so biodegrade after use, and can safely be washed without depositing microplastics in the machine, like Microfiber cloths. Sold in pack of 4 (so use one colour per room), run under water before use, and then rinse and dry between uses, for best performance. Bower Compostable Eco Sponges just need water to expand, to clean your kitchen or bathroom. Sold in a pack of three, at end of life just cut up and add to the compost bin (so use with biodegradable cleaning products). Dry between uses.

Conventional cleaning cloths are made with nylon (plastic). So each time you wipe a surface and rinse the cloth, millions of tiny pieces of plastic collectively go down drains and wash into the sea, where they get accidentally ingested by ‘filter feeders’ (like whales, who eat by ingesting huge amounts of food and water, then pushing water out through baleen plates, before swallowing. The plastic remains in their bodies, where it never biodegrades, often causing harm and even death. So by switching to compostable cloths, you help whales, dolphins, seals and other marine creatures!

Compostable Sponges (with loofah scourer)

seep compostable sponges

Seep compostable sponges include a loofah scourer to clean dishes, and are suitable for non-stick pans. A great alternative to plastic sponges with green tops, these can also scour home surfaces. Made from biodegradable cellulose (wood pulp), these can replace the 600 million mostly plastic sponges tossed each year.

You can disinfect your sponge each week by popping it on regular cycle of your dishwash or popping it in the washing machine). After around a month, pop it in your food waste caddy or compost bin (use biodegradable cleaning products, so it’s safe to do so).

The Best Biodegradable Bathroom Cleaners

madekind cleaners

Many bathroom cleaners are full of toxic chemicals which are not only bad for us, but also don’t biodegrade. So once they rinse down the drain, this causes algae bloom which chokes oxygen out of the water, harming fish and marine wildlife. Here are some better options. Use with biodegradable cleaning cloths.

  1. Elmkind Grapefruit & Palmarosa Bathroom Cleaner (Devon) is made with organic ingredients, sold in an aluminium bottle with spray head (most councils take plastic tops in recycling). The 500ml refill concentrate makes 5 bottles. A 5% profits go to animal welfare/ocean charities.
  2. Bio-D Bathroom Cleaner  (no added fragrance) is sold in health storess, in recycled plastic bottles (often with refill stations and bulk sizes). Use the spray on glass, ceramics, perspex, chrome and most non-porous surfaces (not for gold-plated taps).

MADEKIND (UK) is a brand of planet-friendly cleaners, packed in dark brown glass bottles, with reusable tops and metal caps for the refills. All items are made from biodegradable plant-based ingredients, and scented with essential oils.

Avoid essential oils for pregnancy/nursing and conditions like epilepsy or asthma (avoid rosemary, citrus and sage oils for high blood pressure). Avoid essential oils on areas where pets may roam (like kitchen counter tops for cats!) or food bowls.

madekind cleaners

The range (all scented with lavender, rosemary and peppermint) includes:

Home Things Sponge is shipped flat like a cracker, then turns into a sponge under the tap. The difference is that it’s compostable, so no microplastics. Sold in a pack of 3.

How to Clean Your Toilet (naturally)

Bide toilet bombs and toilet scrub

Bide Toilet Freshening Bombs

Modern toilets are pretty easy to clean, as long as you control what goes down them! Smells and skid marks (!) tend to be from diets rich in greasy food, meat and alcohol. A ‘good poo’ should be easy to pass (no reading newspapers on the loo needed!), not smelly and float like a log! That’s because to make ‘good poo’, you need to drink water and eat fibre.

Drinking enough water also leads to urine the colour of white wine (dark yellow can be due to illness, but usually due to needing more water and less beer!) Don’t worry if your pee (temporarily) turns pink after eating beetroot (otherwise get blood in urine checked out).

Smashing Some ‘Toilet Cleaning’ Myths

  1. Oxygen bleachis used for cleaning and laundry, but you don’t need it for cleaning toilets. Never mix bleach (natural or otherwise) with anything as it produces lethal gas. You also don’t need disinfectants (don’t use near pets: Erin Heights Vet Hospital says Dettol destroys bacteria walls, and Veterinary Poisons Information Service says Zoflora can cause ulcers).
  2. You don’t need toxic air fresheners. Just clean your bathroom with unscented biodegradable dish wash and open windows (if safe). For men/boys who miss their aim, add a little cleaning vinegar to laundry to remove pee smell. Houseplants don’t ‘clean the air’ (toxic houseplants should be avoided near pets).
  3. If you eat well, you don’t need a toilet brush, as there won’t be anything to ‘brush away!’ A washable biodegradable sponge is fine. Plastic toilet brushes break bits off that reach the sea after flushing. If used, switch to a plastic-free toilet brush.

The Best Biodegradable Toilet Cleaners

Ekologik toilet cleaner

Once you’ve given your bathroom a good eco-clean, just use a good biodegradable toilet cleaner once or twice a week. Choose unscented brands around babies, children and pets (or for pregnancy/nursing). Stop dogs from drinking from toilet bowls by keeping the door closed and lid down (Borax used to clean toilets, is toxic to pets).

Ekologic Toilet Cleaner is sold in a biodegradable pouch to add to water, to make a thick natural toilet cleaner (add 1 pod to 500ml of water, then tear up packaging to compost (remove the sticker). Scented with peppermint and geranium.

Bio-D toilet cleaner

Bio-D is sold unscented or scented in recycled plastic bottles (find in health shops and farm shops, also sold wholesale for hotels and restaurants in giant bottles). Use under the bowl rim and leave overnight, then use a sponge to remove dissolved scale.

Brown stains are usually iron/manganese, from hard water. Pour a cup of cleaning vinegar in the pan and scrub. Leave awhile, then add 1 cup of baking soda, follow with another cup of vinegar. Leave to fizz for a few hours, then scrub away stains.

Elmkind peppermint toilet cleaner

  1. ElmKind Natural Toilet Cleaner (Devon) is made with biodegradable ingredients, scented with peppermint oil. The first metal bottle includes stainless steel pourer, then buy affordable refills. Profits help animal welfare/ocean charities.
  2. Mix Green Clean is an organic toilet mix in a tin. Scented with lavender, place a teaspoon in a jug and mix with warm water, leave for an hour. Add to toilet, wait then flush.
  3. Authentic House Toilet Bombs (Wales) are sold in a box to last 36 weeks. Just drop one in to watch it fizz. Made with baking soda and scented with tea tree oil.

bide toilet freshening tablets

Bide Toilet Freshening Bombs remove limescale and are infused with peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus. Follow with Toilet Cleaning Scrub (this uses Epsom salt to remove stubborn stains, while citric acid and baking soda tackle limescale). Sprinkle 1 tablespoon around pan and in bowl, leave for 15 minutes then scrub (grapefruit & eucalyptus).

Cleaning Toilets with Electric Water!

Buzz cleaning

Buzz (Australia) is a revolutionary cleaning system that hopefully will reach our shores soon. It uses water, vinegar and salt to create an electric current by plugging into a USB. This creates hypochlorous acid (used for eye, wound and vet care) which can kill viruses and is as strong as bleach. Yet gentle enough to clean fruits and veggies (the natural swimming pool odour has no fragrance).

To use, just squeeze in one of the activators and each one lasts 3 weeks, working out around 50p a week. It cleans all surfaces (won’t corrode like vinegar) and can also be used to clean changing pads, nappy pails, baby toys and clean pet accidents on rugs, toys and bedding. Use with baking soda as a mild abrasive for stubborn stains (dry with a cloth, as there are no chemical drying accelerants).

Natural Alternatives to Chlorine Bleach

Wilton laundry bleach

Chlorine bleach is a substitute for hydrogen, used in many cleaning and laundry brands and ‘thick bleach’ for toilets. Made by splitting salt, it’s toxic to people and pets, and poisons wildlife, rivers and seas (and contributes to acid rain, ozone depletion and climate change). Also found in medicines, tap water, swimming pools, PVC (a toxic plastic) and used to wash animal-based foods. Chlorine toxins can also be produced when burning items in incinerators, bonfires and pottery kilns (and leaded petrol). And chlorine is also used to bleach paper and disposable nappies.

Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) is a mix of water, salt and chalk that breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate (it does not bleach clothes). Never mix bleach (natural or otherwise) with anything as it produces lethal gas. Wear Fair Trade rubber gloves and store in a cool dark place away from children and pets (hydrogen peroxide could cause irritation and bleach fur; birds in particular are sensitive to fumes).

To activate oxygen bleach, you must add water heated to at least 40 degrees C (it’s only effective for a few hours, but you can pour leftover solution down the sink, where it will unblock drains and then safely biodegrade). Recycle old empty bleach bottles (if they still contain toxic bleach, wrap securely before safe disposal in the bin). Good brands of oxygen bleach are:

  1. Eco Living (code englandnaturally for 5% discount)
  2. Wilton London
  3. Peace with the Wild
  4. Bio D Laundry Bleach
  5. Mangle & Wringer

Simple Ways to Use Chlorine Bleach

  1. Clean/Disinfect (4 tbls in 1 litre of hot water is good for ovens). To clean fridge (1 tbl in cup of warm/hot water, soak for 10 minutes, wipe clean). To clean toilet bowl (pour in 6 tbls, scrub, rinse).
  2. Laundry booster(add few tbls to dispenser). For whitening (linen, trainers, armpit stains – soak in 2 tbls hot water for one hour). To bleach nappies (soak in hot water for 30 minutes, then wash).
  3. Mug stains (1/2 tsp to each mug, fill with boiled water, wait 15 minutes, then wash). Also for jars (to disinfect and remove labels).
  4. Mould (make a warm water spray, apply, wait 15 minutes, rinse, wipe). For shower curtains (soak in solution of 2 tbls with 5 litres hot water). To clean tile grout (mix 3 tbls in 2 gallons hot water, apply, wait 15 mins, rinse with clean water).
  5. Dustbins (mix cup of bleach with gallon of water, clean & rinse). For mops, brooms, scrub brushes (soak in solution of hot water).
  6. Stains (pre-soak few tbls in bowl of warm water, then wash). To spot-clean, mix with warm water to a paste, rub and wash.  For upholstery stains (mix 1/2 tbl with 250ml of warm water in bottle. Scrub, leave, pour over fresh water and blot (testfirst – not for wool/silk).
  7. Fences (hose-spray to wet, apply solution with paintbrush, leave 5 to 15 mins, spray again to rinse). For decks & patios (clean with solution, leave 30 minutes, dry and rinse).

Chlorine is a poisonous gas. In case I should fall over unconscious in the following demonstration involving chlorine, please pick me up and carry me into the open air. Should this happen, the lecture for the day will be concluded. Egon Wiberg

I am going to listen to the wind and see what it tells me, or see if it tells me anything at all. I will follow the songlines and see what they sing to me. And I might bring a harvest of fresh tales, which I can scatter like apple seeds across this tired and angry land.
