Seltzers are simply fruits mixed with fizzy water, and hard seltzers have alcohol added. So they are not ‘health drinks’ but healthier than knocking back a bottle of wine! Here are some of the most sustainable brands:
Arrowtown Drinks is a brand of hard seltzers (fizzy water mixed with fruit juice and alcohol) founded by two brothers, who have an environmental business background, and wanted to do something to help wildlife, after going on safari and viewing wild orcas. Each purchase helps support two charities that help elephant and marine wildlife consrvation. Elephant populations have fallen 90% in just 100 years, and over 150,000 whales and seals are killed each year, by discarded fishing gear.
These seltzers are made with carbonated water, fermented apples and beet sugar. The three flavours (available in mixed cases) are Lime Elderflower, Red Berries and Tropical.
You can also buy sustainable hard seltzers from:
Berczy (natural fruits, spring water and sugar beet alcohol). Lemon-Lime is a good gin & tonic alternative.
Long Shot Drinks (flavours include strawberry rhubarb, raspberry blackcurrant and grapefruit (not suitable for some people on certain medications, check paper inserts).
