One lovely nostalgic thing about England is that many seaside resorts don’t have just their place name, but also the words ‘on-sea’ or ‘by-the-sea’. This is a throwback to the days when Victorians would visit the seaside to heal often from diseases like TB, as doctors thought the sea air would do people good. Back in the day, they would get changed in ‘changing stations’ on wheels and then be wheeled out to the waters!
Check for tide times and sinking mud, and take care on windy days as the sea is powerful and could easily knock a person or dog off their feet (check for dog beach bans before travel and keep dogs away from seaweed, as it can expand in the stomach as it dries).
Barton-on-Sea (Hampshire) is at the start of the Solent Way. It spans the length of Keyhaven Nature Reserve.
Bexhill-on-Sea (East Sussex) is a pretty Edwardian seaside town near Hastings, which has one of the best Art Deco buildings (now used for entertainment) in England.
Burnham-on-Sea (Somerset) was a small village, when it grew in size for holiday makers. It sits on Bridgwater Bay at the mouth of River Parrett.
Clacton-on-Sea (Essex) is the largest town on the 350-mile county coast, a nice affordable resort and home to affordable bed-and-breakfasts.
Frinton-on-Sea (Essex) is a nice quiet beach resort with lots of sandy and is noted for its quiet and cleanliness.
Goring-by-Sea (West Sussex) is located in England’s sunniest county, just a few miles from Worthing.
Grange-over-Sands (Cumbria) is a nice former Edwardian holiday resort. It sits on Morecambe Bay, so good for wildlife but be careful to avoid sinking sands (the promenade is paved).
Hopton-on-Sea (Norfolk) is just south of Great Yarmouth and near Lowestoft, England’s most easterly region.
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea (Northumberland) is a very nice little place. An affordable resort known f or beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
Saltburn-on-Sea (Yorkshire) is in North Yorkshire, and still retains its Victorian charm with a pier and colourful Italian gardens.
Wells-Next-the-Sea (Norfolk) is on the beautiful northern coast, in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Access 40 miles of glorious beaches, with pastel beach huts.
Westcliffe-on-Sea (Essex) is near the world’s longest pier in Southend, and home to cafes, sloping lawns and chip takeaways.
Westgate-on-Sea (Kent) is a charming seaside town on the north-east coast. It borders the larger resort of Margate (remember the Jolly Boys Outing in Only Fools & Horses?)
