Biona was one of England’s first organic companies, way before it was fashionable! Founded by a man (who was living in Ireland on a commune) and a reflexologist, together they founded a veggie restaurant and then this brand, which is now sold in 40 countries.
This brand packs many items in paper packaging. Councils and supermarket bag bins recycle soft plastic packaging.
You’ll find these products in all good independent health stores and farm shops, or order in bulk online, to save on shipping costs. Around 400 (most) items are vegan, and any coconut oil or milk used, is guaranteed free from monkey harvesting. Any imported ingredients are not air-freighted.
Here we list a few favourite items, that we think are unique.
Before cooking, read up on food safety for people and pets.
Safari Spelt Pasta offers organic German-grown spelt flour that is gentle on smaller tummies. This organic pasta is quick to cook and is sold in a plastic-free box. Or choose dinosaur organic wheat pasta.
Paper-packaged pantry basics (all its pasta, rice and lentils are now in paper packaging).
Organic Worcestershire Sauce is free from anchovies (fish). Ideal for tomato sauce or savoury snacks.
Monkey-Friendly Organic Coconut Cream
Coconut Whipping Cream is great to dollop on desserts. Made with organic Sri Lankan coconuts (and guaranteed no monkey slave harvesting), chill this overnight then pour into a bowl and whip into a cream. This company also makes light coconut milk, cream coconut and coconut milk powder (use in smoothies, soups, curry, porridge and ice-cream).
Organic Juice in Glass Bottles
Look in stores for their range of organic juices including tart cherry, orange and apple. They are also good to add a few drops in baked goods. Cherry juice is also good as a natural sleep aid. Avoid unpasteurised juice for children, pregnancy/nursing and weak immune systems.
