Food halls are gathering pace, where all the shops and restaurants within them are vegan. These lucky people who live nearby are able to go shopping, knowing that everything in every shop does not have to be checked for animal ingredients. Let’s meet a few:
Selfridges (London, England) is known as one of the best food halls in the world, although us vegans may wish to differ, as they also sell foods like pate de foie gras. Having said that, they are moving with the times, and now have their own vegan hall within the food hall. One local company is Rudy’s Vegan Butcher, which offers an incredible selection of vegan meats and the Rudy’s Ruben’z (a pastrami sandwich with pickles, crispy onions and Russian dressing). You can also buy a Veatball sub and a seasonally changing plant-based pie of the day.
Plant City was founded by raw chef Matthew Kenney, and is based in Rhode Island, USA. The world’s first plant-based vegan food hall and marketing has 4 restaurants and 3 bars, all created by him, along with a coffee bar and bakery. You can go shopping and even book a private event or attend one in the community space. Located in downtown Providence, here you’ll find:
- A burger bar & sports lounge
- A quick counter and smoothies
- Gourmet groceries & goods
- A plant-based pizza bar
- A Mexican restaurant & bar
- Expresso drinks & Teas
- Desserts & custom cakes
- Public classes & events
- Private parties & events
- Ready-made & quick picks
- A Cake shop!
- Catering for entertaining & large orders
Plant City only uses compostable straws and cups etc, it’s situated in a walkable area and uses local ingredients, with no palm oil. It’s even powered by renewable energy. Due to there being no elevator, only the 1st floor is wheelchair-accessible, but they are happy to serve meals from any restaurant on any floor, direct to you. They also offer pick-up and home delivery within 10 miles.
Shady Pines Food Court (Portland, USA) has recently launched in the land of the food cart. Street food is very popular in this eco city, and this food court houses six of them together, along with indoor and outdoor seating areas: You’ll find:
- Cajun-Creole food
- Persian noodle soaps
- Soft-serve ice cream
- Mac & cheese
- Comfort food
- Sushi
There is also a night market, if you’re a vegan truck driver!
