Where to Get an Organic Perm

Millions of women have perms, to turn straight hair into curly hair. But just like the other way around (black women straightening their curly locks), both can cause immense damage to your hair and the planet, due to all the chemicals. Fortunately there are new companies coming onto the market that offer organic versions, so hopefully other brands will follow suit.

Perms were huge back in the 80s, and even male footballers permed their hair. Today millions of older women still enjoy a weekly trip to the hair salon, and a perm every few months or so. But conventional perm lotions are not just toxic and mostly tested on animals, but also can lead to brittle hair and even infections and bald patches.

Perm lotions work by breaking down the entire hair shaft to reshape it into curls, through perming lotion, used with curlers. The idea is to add volume, and movement.

  1. Natulique Curl Creator is an innovative professional system that uses far less chemicals, with plant protein to strengthen hair. This vegan-friendly formula is free from ammonia and the usual nasties, and contains beneficial fruit acids to match the PH of hair.
  2. Think Curl is a vegan-friendly and ammonia-free perming system. Enriched with plant amino acids, this is less likely to irritate the skin, nasal passages or weaken hair. There is also a separate activator to add to the lotion, to adjust the PH according to hair type. Also works for hair relaxing too. Made from gluten-free wheat protein, soy protein and chamomile.
  3. Natulique offers a biodegradable straw fibre mixing bowl which can be used for perm lotion or professional hair colouring.
  4. Cloud Nine Hair will recycle all your unwanted hair tools. Just drop off your old straighteners, wands, tongs or hairdryers at the post office, and they will handle the rest.

I am going to listen to the wind and see what it tells me, or see if it tells me anything at all. I will follow the songlines and see what they sing to me. And I might bring a harvest of fresh tales, which I can scatter like apple seeds across this tired and angry land.
