Why Being Vegan is ‘Good Karma’

Some people say that karma does not exist. In fact, texts on reincarnation were removed from The Bible, and all (or most) other religions agree that it does exist. It’s important to note that karma is not ‘punishment’, rather soul lessons that we return to this planet to learn. A good book on the subject is Secrets of Karma, which explains in plain English what karma is, and how it works.

If you are having a real hard time of life, it may help to know that you may be suffering from ‘acceleration of karma’. This basically means older souls choose (before they are born) to learn several life lessons in one life, and this can lead to you going through tough times, in order to progress your soul more. That’s why books like ‘The Secret’ often don’t work, because if your soul chose to suffer to accelerate your karma, all the affirmations in the world won’t work. You are better off doing what Vedic astrologers suggest. And just accept that your life is more like a DVD that presses’ play’ when you are born, and you just have to put up with it!

If you do this and focus more on just acceptance, non-attachment and relaxing in the moment, you will find your go over the ‘road bumps of life’ with less stress. That’s the purpose of Vedic astrology, to forewarn you, so you know the bad things to expect so you can be more prepared. This is the opposite of the ‘standing in the mirror saying I am getting better and better in every way’, when you are dying of cancer. This creates a resistance that could lead a positive person to die bitter, twisted and hateful, because the affirmations did not work.

So what about the vegan lifestyle? Of course, when people eat meat, they are eating the fear and terror of the animal. Vegan Society founder Donald Watson grew up on a farm, and went vegan when he physically witnessed someone slaughter a terrified screaming pig on a relative’s farm. He was so traumatised he never ate meat again, and later became vegan. His brother and sister also went vegetarian (along with giving up smoking, alcohol and becoming peaceful objectors to the war (he died age 95 some years back). This strange turn of events led their bemused mother to note that she was ‘like a hen who had given birth to a cluck of ducks!’

The old adage of ‘you will come back as a cow’ misunderstands what karma is about. It’s not punishment, it’s about creating a world where others could imagine the pain and want no part of it. Most people who eat meat do care, they just prefer to turn their eyes away from the end result of a herd of cows grazing happily in a field. What makes vegans vegans – is that most can’t. They follow things through in their minds and hearts to the end, which is why they are creating ‘good karma’ in thinking of a world where all species are treated with respect.

I am going to listen to the wind and see what it tells me, or see if it tells me anything at all. I will follow the songlines and see what they sing to me. And I might bring a harvest of fresh tales, which I can scatter like apple seeds across this tired and angry land.
