Good News England (positive online news – by city)

Good News England is a very nicely designed website, focusing on good news stories nationwide, listed by cities or some towns. Everything is written in-house or submitted by their local writers. The site is only a year old or so, but already the small but growing team is reporting of verified good news stories.

Covering over 54 towns and cities, it’s free to read and has no ads or investors. So it’s entirely funded by supporters, which helps to big up the news in your town, and open doors for local young writers.

Some example good news stories

  • A young woman held a record 60-hour DJ event, to raise money for dog-walking charity The Cinnamon Trust.
  • In Staffordshire, the first wild beaver in centuries has just been born.
  • Little terns (birds) saved by decades of volunteer efforts
  • Cambridge researchers work to save endangered swift birds
  • Former alcoholics support each other in recovery

What’s really nice about this site is that you can also look up your local city (or sometimes a town) and find local good stories on your doorstep!

It also has a filter to show you how it filters out the overwhelming majority of stories to give you a nervous breakdown, and carefully selects one that are hopeful. This is not just ‘happy clappy’ site (there are serious stories in here too). But it’s not a site crammed with stories of ‘crime, outrate, big pharma and climate alarm’.
