How Was Stonehenge Built?
There is no single definitive answer to exactly how Stonehenge was constructed. Archaeologists have proposed various techniques based on experimental archaeology and evidence from prehistoric construction.
Wooden structures may have been used to move stones. Ropes made from plant fibres could have helped pull them. Sledges and timber rollers may have assisted transportation.
For upright stones, prehistoric builders could have dug large holes and created ramps or sloping surfaces. The stone could then have been raised gradually into position.
The lintels presented another challenge. They had to be lifted high enough to sit across the tops of the upright stones. The methods used remain an impressive demonstration of prehistoric engineering.
