Derbyshire lays claim (along with Leicestershire – there are debates!) to being the most central place in England. It’s true that these two counties are furthest from the sea. The Peak District is England’s oldest national park, opened in 1951. Famed for its limestone valleys and White Peak, you’ll also find gritstone edges and moorland and an impressive 26,000 miles of dry stone wall (made with mortar).

a story of selfless & heroic villagers

This county is home to the village of Eyam, its history coming to light during the pandemic. During the plague of 1665/1666, villagers isolated themselves after becoming infected with cloth with infectious fleas, in order to save others (a few people did survive, and their ancestors live on).

Bakewell Tart is one of England’s favourite baked puddings, hailing from the town in Derbyshire’s Peak District National Park, named after the word ‘Badequella’ which means Bath-Well (warm springs) from Saxon times. Try these Cherry Bakewell Blondies (So Vegan) which can be subbed with raspberries, for a more affordable version.

Keep this recipe away from pets due to stone fruits, nuts & fresh dough (read more on keeping people & pets safe in the kitchen).
