Keswick (a pretty mountain town in the Lake District)

Keswick Cumbria

People often think of Lake Windermere when being told of the Lake District. But actually further north is the pretty town of Keswick, which sits below mountains and is less touristy. Connected to many poets, it has run a weekly food market for over 700 years!

Nearby Castlerigg stone circle is one of the oldest in England, and the town is surrounded by volcanic ash that is 450 million years old.

When out walking, always follow the Countryside Code, to keep all creatures safe.

This area is very popular with hikers, not least due to nearby mountains:

Skiddaw is the highest peak in the Northern Fells. And Blencathdra has six summits (both mountains overlook the town. Cat Bells is one of the easier climbs, offering panoramic views over Derwentwater. Although it does have some dicey areas, Alfred Wainwright called this ‘mini mountain’ a place where’ grandmothers and children can climb the heights together’.
