Scotland’s Persie Distillery (helps dogs, cats & horses!)
Persie Distillery is a Scottish brand of gins. It became known for its starter, main course and pudding gins. Each one is designed to stimulate the olfactory palate (that’s why there is a big nose on the logo!)
Talking of noses that smell well – many of these gins donate to dog charities, from helping rescue shelters to supporting a doggie food bank. It has since expanded the range to fund cat rescues and horse welfare charities.
Rinse then recycle bottles (caps can be left on, machines separate them). Recycle corks in bulk at Recorked.
Citus fruits (often used to garnish drinks) are toxic to pets. So keep them well away, as you sip your dog-friendly gins!
The range includes:
- Labrador contains juniper, cardamom and coriander. Mix with tonic water or lemonade, and garnish with lemon and torn mint.
- Collie has notes of heather, nettles and rosemary. Mix with tonic water. Garnish with a sprig of fresh basil or rosemary.
- Golden Retriever has notes of vanilla, almond and gingerbread. Mix with tonic water or ginger ale, and garnish with a wedge of orange.
- Terrier has notes of juniper, plus spicy cinnamon and cardamom.
- Whippet has notes of grassy juniper, lemon peel, with starwberries and black pepper. Serve with tonic water, lemonade or ginger ale.
- Spaniel contains cinnamon and mace (related to nutmeg – this spice is toxic so keep away from dogs when cooking or baking).
- Dachshund is bursting with zesty fresh limes (leftover from making citrus gin). Pour over ice to top with Prosecco, or enjoy with soda. Garnish with fresh mint or a strawberry. Also good on pancakes!
- Dog Days (with top notes of woodland walks). Serve with any mixer, and a twist of orange and cinnamon bark.
There are a few other gins in the range including Old Tom Gin (notes of butterscotch and almonds for a gingerbread finish – mix with tonic water or ginger ale). And herby aromatic (bay tree, rosemary, basil) – mix with light tonic and garnish with fresh basil leaves.
Pusscat vodka (helps a cat rescue shelter)
Pusscat Vodka (silky and incredibly smooth just like a cat), this has faint hints of fresh herbs and a tiny pinch of black pepper. Serve over ice or mix with tonic water or lemonade.
Unbridled Gin (to help a horse charity)
Unbridled Gin has top notes of fresh cut grass and apples, and heart notes of hay and sandalwood. Garnish with a wedge of fresh green apple and slice of carrot! Profits help World Horse Welfare.
Carrots and apples are nice treats for horses. Bu always ask permission, as some can’t eat them due to risk of colic (and should only be fed in moderation due to sugars).
If given permission, slice carrots lengthwise (not into round coins) and cut apples into quarters (or slices) and remove core and seeds. Feed from a flat palm (to stop horses accidentally nipping your fingers).
