Don’t give straws to babies (choking hazards). Open cups also let babies develop facial muscles for speech/eating. Avoid metal straws for children, dexterity issues or if on the move (as they don’t bend). 

What is borosilicate glass?

These straws are made from the same kind of toughened glass as Pyrex dishes. It’s made from silica and boron oxide, and handles high and sudden temperatures better than normal glass.

As well as straws, this type of glass is also used for cooking and baking items, and laboratory glassware. Remember the old Bunsen Burner science experiments at school?

If you do smash toughened glass, it can’t go in recycling bins. Just sweep up and put it in thickened cardboard to protect landfill workers, and bin securely.
