Vegan baking mixes are ideal for people who don’t to bake a cake from scratch, but most brands are made with factory-farmed dairy ingredients and palm oil. Here are some better ideas!

You can recycle soft packaging at supermarket bag bins, if your kerbside does not recycle. 

Before baking, read up on food safety for people and pets (many ingredients like chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, citrus and nutmeg are unsafe near animal friends). 

Heating any cookware (not just Teflon) is not safe around birds. But hopefully ‘pet birds’ are in an aviary.

Freya Cox took a year off from studying psychology, to become the first vegan contestant on the Great British Bake-Off.

A breath of fresh air with her North Yorkshire accent, Freyas is a fresh new brand of simple-to-make baking mixes. They are all vegan and free from palm oil. The mixes are in four flavours:

  • Lemon Drizzle Loaf (a light lemon sponge, soaked in a tangy glaze)
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding (the world’s favourite pudding – from Cumbria)
  • Choc Chip Brookie (half brownie, half cookie!)
  • Choc Chip Marble Cookies (vanilla and chocolate dough)

To make, just follow the pack instructions. Line a baking tray. Pour oat milk, melted vegan butter  and the sachet in a bowl, bake the mixed batter and leave to cool.
