Join the Supplement Transparent Label Campaign

The Transparent Label Campaign has been set up by Terraseed, a wonderful vegan supplement company in the USA, which makes supplements for adults and children.
The founder (a long-distance runner) discovered that the supplements industry creates 1.8 billion plastic bottles each year, half containing animal-derived ingredients, causing the deaths of 24 billion creatures (many of them fish).
Check with GP before taking supplements if pregnant/nursing or on medication. Keep away from young children and pets. Recycle unwanted supplements/medicines at pharmacies (never flush down loo).

So after formulating her own supplements that have many loyal fans, she decided to educate others about this surprising fact, to encourage all supplement makers to empower their consumers, so they know what to buy and avoid, according to their own personal ethics.
We Need Proper Labels on Supplements
If you visit any health store, pharmacist or supermarket (or go online), you’ll be bombarded with a confusing array of supplements. As well as many not being needed (only a few are really any good – a balanced multi-supplement, a pre-natal supplement, vitamin D3 for some people and a few others like plant-based omega 3), the ingredients lists are also confusing:
- Gelatine (animal bones)
- Magnesium stearate
- Creatine
- Collagen
Krill supplements are sold in many health stores, yet are causing by-catch fishing and ‘stealing’ the main food away from whales and other endangered creatures. You can easily get omega 3 acids from nuts, seeds or plant-based omega 3 supplements).
And many of these ingredients are from factory farms or farmed fishing, creating huge amounts of animal suffering worldwide, all completely unnecessary. But even if you are not vegan or vegetarian, confusing labelling often means you would have no idea what’s inside the supplements.
This is a US petition (but if it creates change there, it could help here). It’s basically asking the FDA (the US food and drug administration) to implement better labels, which would mandate companies to disclose if their supplements contained animal by-products:
Presently, the US supplement industry is responsible for the deaths of around:
- 14.4 million pigs
- 3.6 million cows
- 244,000 sheep
- Billions of fish
It takes 100 anchovies to make just one bottle of omega 3.
Plus 1.8 billion plastic pill bottles, most end up on landfills.
