Why Many Councils Are Now Banning Jet Skis

Jet skis can harm seabirds and marine life (and even killed singer Kristy MacColl, when on holiday with her children in Mexico).

It’s illegal to disturb wildlife (including gulls). Report incidents to the Police, Crimestoppers (anonymous) and British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

Many councils are banning jet skis, as they separate mothers from babies underwater, and also cause noise pollution underwater (which affects echo-location and can sound like underwater fireworks).

Jet skis can also stir up sediment and uproot vegetation, destroying critical habitats for nesting sea birds (who may abandon eggs) and leave chicks vulnerable to predators and storms. Shallow waters near shores also act as nurseries for young fish (and feeding grounds for birds).

Larger marine creatures are also affected. Seals have to come up for air, which can result in collision, slow-moving sea turtles can’t escape in time, and birds use energy to fly away from jet skis, which leaves them too exhausted to hunt.

Welsh wildlife presenter Iolo Williams has called for jet ski riders to need licenses (like for car drivers) after locals ploughed through a raft of seabirds, on a puffin sanctuary.

Florida’s Actions to Save Manatees (sea cows)

Jet skis are very popular in Florida and the Caribbean, two places where manatees (gentle sea cows) move slowly through the water. And like seals, they are mammals that have to come up for air.

Save the Manatee Club does wonderful work, not just educating the public, but provides free warning signs for Florida shoreline home owners. So boaters can be reminded what to do, when passing by.
