From Yorkshire to your pint: The story of Brass Castle Brewery

Yorkshire has a proud brewing tradition, with a beer culture that stretches from historic pubs and traditional breweries to a new generation of independent craft producers.
Brass Castle Brewery is in Yorkshire, a reputable brand of vegan beer. The beers are also gluten-free, with a tiny amount of enzyme breaking down during fermentations that breaks down gluten without affecting taste (at time of writing, each beer is tested at certified labs).
All spent grain and hops from brewing are repurposed, to create biogas and fertilisers, or sent to local allotments to nourish the soil.
Before recycling cans, rinse then pop ring-pulls back over holes. Then step on upper cans to pinch rims together (this stops wildlife getting accidentally trapped).
The range includes:
- Helles lager
- Pale ale
- IPA
- Vanilla porter
- Tropical sour
- Grapefruit IPA (check medication)
- Strawberry lime sour
A Yorkshire brewing tradition
Yorkshire has long been associated with beer. The region has a rich history of breweries, pubs, traditional ales, and brewing communities. Beer has been part of everyday social life for generations.
Modern craft breweries such as Brass Castle build on this heritage while introducing new ideas. The result is an interesting combination of tradition and innovation.
Yorkshire beer does not have to mean one particular style. It can include traditional bitters and pale ales alongside modern IPAs, stouts, sour beers, and experimental brews. Brass Castle contributes to this diverse landscape by combining independent Yorkshire brewing with a strong vegan focus.
What does vegan beer mean?
The word ‘vegan’ is generally associated with food, but it also applies to beer. Beer itself is usually made from plant-based ingredients such as malted grains, hops, yeast, and water. However, some traditional brewing methods have historically used animal-derived fining agents to help clarify beer.
One example is isinglass, a substance derived from fish. Fining agents can help remove particles from beer, producing a clearer finished product.
Brass Castle’s vegan identity therefore goes beyond a marketing label. It represents a commitment to producing beer that can be enjoyed by plant-based consumers.
At the same time, vegan beer is not exclusively for vegans. Anyone can enjoy it.
