Homemade Butter Bean Hummus (full of protein)

butter bean hummus

This butter bean hummus (The Veg Space) is full of protein. A great basic recipe that only needs 4 ingredients (lemon juice, tahini, canned butter beans and garlic), you can then have fun varying up the flavours: Add cooked beetroot or vegan pesto to make pink or green hummus, or swap the soil for jarred sun-dried tomatoes.

In the Middle East, hummus is never served ice cold, like those greasy hummus offerings in plastic pots in supermarkets. Instead, it’s made fresh and served warm. Try it, you’ll prefer it!

Before cooking, read up on food safety for people and pets (many foods are unsafe near animal friends). Bin allium scraps (onion, leeks, garlic, shallots, chives) and citrus/tomato/rhubarb scraps, as acids could harm compost creatures. It’s okay to put them in food waste bins (made into biogas).

For tinned foods, fully remove lids (put inside) or pop ring-pulls back over holes (and pinch tops closed) before recycling, to avoid wildlife getting trapped.
