Friendly laundry powder (clean clothes, clean planet)

Friendly laundry powder

Friendly Soap eco laundry powder is a nontoxic formulation that leaves behind no harmful residues. One box should last 25 washes.

Free from palm oil (avoid the scented stain bar near babies or pets).

Choose unscented laundry powder/liquid for pregnancy/nursing, and baby clothes/bedding and pet bedding. Launder synthetic fabrics in a microfiber filter (or hand-wash in sink filters)

For stains, use natural oxygen bleach (never mix bleach with vinegar). You don’t need fabric conditioner (it usually has palm oil and makes clothing flammable when tumble-dried).

Instead, add half a cup of cleaning vinegar to rinse cycle (or half a cup of bicarbonate-of-soda to wash cycle.

Where to recycle toxic laundry products

You can recycle empty bottles at kerbside. For products leftover, don’t pour down drains, take them to your council’s hazardous waste department.

Why laundry powder?

Liquid laundry detergent is familiar and convenient, but it also contains a substantial amount of water. Powder does not need to transport that water.

Instead, the cleaning ingredients are supplied in a concentrated form that can be mixed with water during the washing process. This can have practical benefits.

Powder generally takes up less space than a comparable quantity of liquid detergent and can be easier to store in a cupboard. It also avoids the possibility of a large detergent bottle leaking.

For people with small utility rooms, limited storage or a preference for minimalist household products, this can be particularly useful.

Non-bio laundry powder

Biological detergents contain enzymes that help break down particular types of stains. Non-bio products do not use these enzymes.

Many families prefer non-bio detergent, particularly when washing baby clothes and everyday garments. The choice between bio and non-bio is ultimately personal and depends on factors such as stain levels, fabric types and household preferences.
