Avoid dehydration (simple tips and swaps)

circular bottle

Circular reusable water bottle

Most people can rehydrate safely over a few weeks. How much water to drink depends on weight, age, lifestyle, weather and medication. Cut back on alcohol, soda and caffeine.

A good ball park is to twice fill a reusable water bottle (650ml) each day. More if you drink wine!

After a few weeks, you should see that you feel better and skin and joint conditions improve. Urine should be light straw colour (dark urine is usually due to hydration).

Also learn to cook a few plant-based recipes! Include raw fruits and vegetables, which are mostly water.

Dr Vegan Hyrate+ Supplement

Dr Vegan Hydrate+ (lemon) is also in orange/pineapple flavour. 3rd-party tested, these are great to quickly hydrate for sports people, or anyone in need of some quick boost to hydration. Free from sugar, stevia or artificial sweeteners, they are electrolytes with vitamins B12, C and amino acids.

You get a free bottle with your first purchase, then just order refill sachets (in either flavour or a duo pack). You get discounts for regular subscriptions and can pause or cancel any time.

Endorsed by Mark Foster (a six time world champion swimmer), empty a sachet into your bottle and ‘shake it to wake it’, then drink any time of day, before or after exercise. You can add less or more, to adjust taste.

Always check with your GP before taking supplements if on medication (also for women if pregnant or nursing). Keep them away from children and pets, and recycle unused supplements and medicines at pharmacies (never flush them down the loo).

Sodium and calcium in electrolytes should not be taken in excess. This could lead to higher blood pressure and strain on the kidneys. Always follow directions for recommended daily intake.

Join the transparent label campaign

The Transparent Label Campaign is a worldwide movement set up by US supplement company Terraseed, to demand that supplement companies list full ingredients, so people can avoid ones with gelatine, fish, collagen, creatine and magnesium stearate (mostly in vitamin D and omega 3 supplements – which cause the death of 24 billion creatures each year).

Also boycott krill supplements (you can easily get omega 3 fatty acids from nuts, seeds or algae supplements). Krill is an important food for whales, seals, penguins and fish, and removal causes by-catch of other creatures.
