These are the ideal single-use alternative to baby wipes, that clog our waterways and often contain chemicals (and usually come wrapped in plastic). They are also ideal for environments (like medical use) when for hygiene reasons, reusable washcloths are not allowed.

Biodegradable does not mean flushable

This distinction is particularly important. A wipe can be biodegradable without being suitable for flushing.

Toilets and sewer systems are not designed to handle many types of wipes, and even wipes that break down over time can contribute to blockages. The safest approach is to place used wipes in the appropriate waste stream according to local guidance.

Be careful, as lobbyists have let some brands use the word ‘flushable’ on packs, when nothing really other than toilet paper should be flushed down loos.

Why avoid most facial wipes?

Despite the greenwashing, nearly all brands on sale in stores are made from plastic, and also sold in plastic packaging. Many also (wrongly) say they are flushable (there are campaigns to change the law, as this is allowed to be said, due to political lobbying).

Anything made from polyester or polyproplyene is not biodegradable, no matter what the label says. And flushing them down the loo ends up blocking pipes and causing ‘fatberg’s and harming marine creatures. Many also contain artificial fragrance, which agains harms ecosystems when rinse off down sinks.

Removing everyday makeup

Facial cleansing wipes are often used to remove makeup.

This is important near pets, as most contain pet-toxic zinc oxide, needed to remove before furry friends lick or kiss your face!

If you wear long-lasting or waterproof products, you may need a dedicated makeup remover or a second cleansing step. Avoid rubbing the delicate eye area aggressively. Gentle movements are generally preferable when removing makeup.
