How Tropical Hawaii Keeps Its Seas Clean

Far far away is Hawaii, a group of beautiful tropical islands in the South Pacific. You can’t really ‘keep your own seas completely clean’, due to tides (so whatever trash people drop elsewhere, ends up somewhere else. There is apparently one island in the area where if someone wants some flip-flops, he or she just heads down to the coast, to find a pair that has washed up from thousands of miles away.
In Hawaii, the issue is serious, and due to wildfires caused also by climate change, the islands are really doing everything they can to make a difference.
With help of local surfing singer Jack Johnson (he and his wife have invented a reusable steel cup!), all schools get involved with adults in local beach clean-ups. There are reusable bags everywhere, no-one dreams of dropping litter on the beach. And there is a real pride in educating other communities worldwide, on how to ensure that footprints are all you leave behind, after a trip to the seaside.
