Pitod organic cotton baseball caps (ideal for summer)

organic cotton beanie

This 100% organic cotton baseball cap contains no polyester (recycled or otherwise). That means it can be washed without releasing tiny plastic fibres, known as microplastics, into rivers and oceans.

Available in a range of colours and styles for both men and women, it’s a simple everyday accessory that helps keep the sun out of your eyes on warm days while adding a stylish finishing touch to your outfit.

A brand that puts sustainability frst

This cap is made by Pitod, a London-based fashion brand with sustainability at the heart of everything it does.

Pitod uses organic materials, supports Fair Trade principles, and even donates part of its profits to help fund rainforest reforestation projects. The company is committed to creating clothing that respects both people and the environment.

Because of these efforts, Pitod is one of the few UK fashion brands to receive a “Good” rating from Good on You, an independent website that rates fashion brands on their impact on people, animals, and the planet.

If you’ve never used Good On You before, it’s well worth exploring. Simply search for your favourite clothing brands and see how they score. Many shoppers are surprised by the results.

What about recycled polyester hats?

Some hats include recycled polyester.

Although they reduce waste, synthetic fabrics still shed tiny plastic fibres every time they are washed. These microplastics are too small for many water treatment systems to remove and end up in the sea.

If you buy any hat containing recycled polyester, wash it in a microfiber washing machine filter. This helps capture many of these fibres before they enter waterways.

Choosing natural fibres wherever possible remains one of the easiest ways to reduce microplastic pollution.

Keeping safe in the sun (not just hats!)

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Spend time in the shade during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fibres.
  • Wear sunglasses that provide good UV protection.
  • Apply sunscreen to exposed skin. Wash off before pets kiss you due to zinc oxide (same for deodorants/cosmetics/cocoa butter creams).
  • Read about about pet safety in warmer weather.

A note about babies and hats

According to The Lullaby Trust, babies should wear hats outdoors in cold weather. But hats, socks, cardigans, and other extra layers should be removed as soon as you move indoors or into a warm car.

It has info on overheating inside (clothes, hats, blankets – read more on safe nurseries). The trust recommends indoor temperatures between 16°C and 20°C. Check a baby’s temperature on the chest or back.
