nothing fishy supplements

Omega 3 fatty acids are good for people who don’t eat fish, and are good for your brain, mood, heart, skin, hair and eyes (to prevent dry eyes and macular degeneration). Fish don’t ‘make omega 3 fatty acids’, they get them from consuming algae, so we can do the same to avoid over-fishing (and by-catch) and mercury toxins. Most people notice a positive difference within a month of taking plant-based algae omega 3.

Before taking supplements, check with GP if pregnant/nursing or you have medical conditions or are taking medication. Keep supplements away from young children & pets.

Vegums fish-free omega 3

Vegums offers omega 3 supplements in zero-waste packaging. Keep away from young children & pets, as these look (and taste) like sweets. The brand was founded by two pharmacists, who were fed up of chalky-tasting supplements, and the ‘afterthought phrase’ of items being ‘suitable for vegans’. These have a natural orange flavour, with a tiny amount of beet sugar to sweeten.

what are best foods for omega-3 fatty acids?

As mentioned above, fish is not the best source due to over-fishing (and by-catch) and mercury poisoning. Also once you cook fish, most of the benefits disappear anyway. But we do need ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) as our bodies can’t make it, and it’s used to make omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). Easy ways to get these from food include:

  1. Ground flaxseeds sprinkled on cereal.
  2. Adding chopped walnuts to salads.
  3. Using hemp seeds in salads or dressings.
  4. Taking too much omega 6 fatty acid may negate the effects of omega 3s. So don’t eat too many pumpkin/sunflower seeds and choose rapeseed oil for cooking (over sunflower, sesame or corn oils).
