Simple soap, conscious choice: Alter/native by Suma

aloe vera soap

When it comes to everyday personal care, choosing a soap bar can be about more than simply getting clean. For many people, the ingredients, sourcing, and environmental impact of a product matter just as much as how well it fits into their daily routine.

Alter/native by Suma is a brand of soaps from a wholefood collective set up in the 70s, owned by its 200-strong workforce (there are no bosses or shareholders) in Yorkshire. It’s also widely involved in tree-planting projects in Upper Calder Valley.

Choose unscented soaps for pregnancy/nursing and children. Avoid shea butter for latex allergies. Never use human soaps on pets due to different PH (read more on giving dogs baths).

These are mostly based on coconut and olive oil (to avoid palm oil) and sold in paper packaging. Inspired by the natural power of plants, everything is vegan and not tested on animals. Made in Yorkshire.

Earthbound all-in-one bar is ideal for face and body, and can also be used as a shampoo. It’s scented with lime, lemongrass and tea tree oil.

We do not recommend the ‘far and away’ body bar, as it contains artificial fragrance oil.

Simple ingredients, thoughtful choices

There is a growing interest in uncomplicated personal-care products. Rather than choosing products with long and confusing ingredient lists, many shoppers are looking for familiar ingredients and brands that reflect their personal values.

Alter/native by Suma soap bars are designed with this conscious approach in mind. Their vegan formulation makes them suitable for people following a plant-based lifestyle, while being palm-oil-free makes them an appealing choice for consumers who prefer to avoid palm oil in their personal-care products.

Checking the ingredient list is always a useful habit when choosing any skincare product, particularly if you have specific sensitivities or preferences.

Why choose palm-oil-free soap?

Palm oil is widely used in many everyday products, including soaps and cosmetics. However, concerns surrounding palm oil production and its environmental impact have encouraged many consumers to seek alternatives.

Choosing a palm-oil-free soap can be one small way to align your personal-care choices with your environmental values. Alter/native by Suma provides an option for those who want to make this switch without giving up the convenience of a traditional soap bar.

The appeal of vegan soap bars

Vegan personal care is becoming increasingly popular as people consider the ingredients and manufacturing choices behind the products they purchase. Because soap is something most of us use regularly, choosing an option that reflects your values can be an easy and practical lifestyle change.

Less packaging, less fuss

Solid soap bars also have another advantage: simplicity. Unlike many liquid cleansers, they don’t require a plastic pump bottle. A bar can be stored on a soap dish or draining tray and used directly when needed.

Switching from bottled products to solid bars can therefore be a useful step towards reducing unnecessary packaging in your bathroom. Combined with a vegan, palm-oil-free formulation, a simple soap bar can become part of a more considered personal-care routine.
