Sweet Compassion: The Dreamiest Animal-Friendly Frosting

Vegan strawberry frosting (Rainbow Nourishments)
Vegan frosting (or icing, depending on where you live!) is ideal for covering all your fancy cakes and bakes, and of course can also be used for wedding cakes. These recipes forget carmine (from beetles) for pink icing, and offer natural food dyes to pretty up a basic vegan frosting.
Keep frosting away from pets due to vanilla, nutmeg, coffee, chocolate etc. Never use xylitol sweetener near pets (it’s odd anyway, best to avoid).
Choose organic frosting (some royal icing contains egg). And vegan butter with no palm oil (Flora and Myoko’s are good brands).
For tinned ingredients, rinse/remove lids (or pop ring-pulls over holes) then step on the can to pinch the inner rims together, to avoid wildlife getting trapped at recycling points.
Different types of frosting/icing
- Buttercream is a blend of creamed butter, powdered sugar and milk.
- Cream cheese frosting is a blend of cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar. The tangy taste is often used for red velvet, carrot or banana cakes. It’s softer in texture.
- Ganache is a mix of chopped chocolate and heavy cream, for a fudgy texture.
- Whipped cream frosting is light and airy, a bit like meringue.
