Fed up of being confused by all the different advice in newspapers and magazines? Give them all up, and just read through this list of advice, collated from experts in nutrition, exercise and medicine. They are all pretty simple and mostly follow common sense, with occasional needs or supplements or medical care.

Eat a diet rich in nutrients

If you don’t follow a plant-based diet then at least make it mostly plants. Make sure it’s balanced with various nutrients, not just a couple of the same meals every week.

Before cooking, read up on food safety for people and pets (many foods are unsafe near animal friends). Bin allium scraps (onion, leeks, garlic, shallots, chives) and citrus/tomato/rhubarb scraps, as acids could harm compost creatures. It’s okay to put them in food waste bins (made into biogas).

For tinned foods, fully remove lids (put inside) or pop ring-pulls back over holes (and pinch top opening closed) before recycling, to avoid wildlife getting trapped.

Engage in regular exercise for at least 150 minutes weekly

This can be simply walking or if you like swimming, workouts or yoga. As long as you are getting your body moving, this is fine.

Have regular screenings (if advised)

Most GPs recommend this for certain risks and age groups, but not everyone has to have one. But regular check-ups are a good idea, especially if you have a history of say cancer in your family.

Also ensure you perform regular self-checks like testes examinations.

Support bone density (calcium and exercise)

Ensure you are getting enough plant-based calcium and plant-based vitamin D3 (from sunshine or a supplement) to support strong bones and muscles. Regular exercise will also help.

Get quality sleep  (7 to 9 hours)

Make quality sleep a priority, for mental health too. Regular exercise and good diet (and reduced alcohol) should all help). Along with anxiety reducing helpers, whatever works for you (prayer, walks, meditation, yoga, gardening, boating etc).

Social connections

Even if you’re a happy hermit, it’s good to have at least one or two strong friendships or family bonds, to get through tough times, and life trials. If you are feeling lonely, then just ‘find your tribe’ by visiting places with people like you (if you’re a hermit, try a reading club at the library, a church were people mostly leave you alone, or even try walking on your own on set paths, where you’ll be surrounded by a few like-minded people).
