Use your vote to create a greener planet
Around 39 million people are eligible to vote in England. Just imagine if everyone read manifestos and actually took an interest in local and national politics, what a difference it would make!
It’s understandable why so many people feel disillusioned. But usually there are one or two candidates that are slightly more empathetic to communities and the planet. If you don’t vote, you are literally voting for the others!
Register to vote
You can register to vote on the government website. Ensure you do this in plenty of time before an election takes place.
If you have any safety concerns, you can register to vote anonymously.
Keep your name off the open register
By law, your details will be on the electoral register, and this is how local politicians contact you. But you can opt to have your name removed from the open register. This is the one that is sold on to others for money, and your details are gathered to try to sell you stuff.
If you can’t vote in person, do so by post
This has to be done in plenty of time. But if there’s a reason you can’t get to the polling station, organise a postal vote in advance.
Read the manifestos!
There is no point voting for someone just because of a speech on a podium. Spend an evening reading the entire manifesto of each candidate (available online these days, see sites below).
So you know that politician’s values, why he or she is standing, and what policies they would enact if elected.
Take your voter ID
Before you go to the polling booth, ensure you take your proper voter ID with you. Without it, you may be sent back home.
Volunteer to give a lift
If you know of an elderly or disabled neighbour (or someone without transport), offer to give a lift so it makes it easier for them to vote.
Mark your ballot paper carefully
Many ballot papers are marked as spoiled, if someone makes an illegible mark or crosses two names by mistake. Think carefully before you put your cross!
Don’t feel pressured by others
Even if campaigners are outside the polling booth, never feel that you have to vote a certain way, just because others tell you to.
