A Guide to South West England, Naturally
South West England is a large area, taken up a lot by the big county of Devon, which spans three areas (southern sailing resorts, northern quieter villages and East Devon which contains parts of the Jurassic coast. There are also two small National Parks: Dartmoor and Exmoor.
Further west is the smaller county of Cornwall, home to good weather and soil, so much that it has many vineyards. 23 miles off-shore are the Caribbean-like Isles of Scilly (rough seas, lots of shipwrecks).
Then there’s Dorset, which has a lovely coastline and many inland villages. And there is of course ‘Scrumpy Somerset’, where you are sure to find a good tankard of cider!
The cities of Bath (elegant and quiet) and Bristol (vibrant and green) are very contrasting. But you can even walk between the two, along the old 13-mile disused railway line.
Wiltshire is more urban, but is home to Salisbury Cathedral, which American writer Bill Bryson called England’s most beautiful building.
