These typewriter key earrings are made in Gloucestershire by a talented aritsan. The charming black keys are cut out from an old Remington portable typewriter, spelling out the words ‘back space’ and ‘shift lock’.

A lovely retro zero waste gift for a writer, publisher or bookworm, the keys are carefully assembled to metal backs, with sterling silver hooks. Packed in an elegant organza bag.

The history of Remington typewriters

Remington was one of the first brands of early portable typewriters (Mark Twain would bash out his books on one). Founded by a family that made guns, thankfully it switched businesses.

The first versions only used uppercase, and the invention of the shift key, enabled lowercase letters too. They bell warned typists they were about to approach the right-hand margin, to prepare to type the next line.

Today with most no longer in use, Remington typewriters make fantastic upcycling materials. From jewellery to desk lamps to handles for cabinets!
